Biltricide Praziquantel: the Most Effective Anti-Worm Medication

Infections caused by parasites are quite prevalent among people nowadays. Apart from a weakened immune system, parasitic infection leads to several health problems. People in developing nations of Africa, South America, Asia and the Middle East are the most vulnerable ones to this infection. Parasites generally get into your body either through mouth or skin. Diagnosis of the infection can be done by taking samples of blood, urine, stool, or tissues from an infected patient.

The treatment of parasitic infections received a shot in the arm with the arrival of Biltricide (Praziquantel) which is quite effective against these types of infection as well as diseases caused by parasites. Ailments like schistosomiasis and liver flukes can be treated with this wonder drug. It also augments the physical and mental state of the patient.

Now, we’ll look at how effective Praziquantel is against schistosomiasis which is caused by parasitic flatworms called schistosomes. People with these parasites in their bodies experience rashes or itching of the skin during the initial days as symptoms are difficult to get identified at an early stage. A doctor usually prescribes you to test a sample of your urine or stool to diagnose schistosomiasis.

The treatment of schistosomiasis begins by taking Biltricide for 1 to 2 days. The dosage for this ailment is determined as 20 mg/kg (of bodyweight) thrice a day. A time interval of not less than 4 hours and not more than 6 hours must be provided between doses as single day therapy.

Biltricide (Praziquantel) is also effective against major liver flukes found in human beings such as Clonorchiasis and Opisthorchiasis. There is hardly any clinical difference between these two ailments. You can diagnose Clonorchiasis and Opisthorchiasis in the same manner, by testing the urine or stool sample for parasites. The recommended dosage of Biltricide is 25 mg/kg of entire bodyweight, three times in a day. The time gap between doses is 4-6 hours as one day treatment.

You should take Biltricide tablets orally with any beverage during a meal. The dosage frequency, as mentioned earlier, is three times a day with an interval of 4-6 hours. Swallow the pills whole and quickly without chewing, crushing, or splitting it. Chewing them in the mouth will leave you with a bitter taste that ultimately leads to vomiting or suffocating.

Praziquantel may interact with certain medicines, if taken concurrently. As a result, you may experience some serious or mild side effects, or lack of effectiveness in the Biltricide treatment. Your doctor should be informed about any of the following prescription and nonprescription drugs taken by you before taking Praziquantel:

  • Medicines used to treat seizures, such as phenytoin (Dilantin), ethotoin (Peganone), and mephenytoin (Mesantoin)
  • Concomitant administration of rifampin
  • Concomitant administration of antiepileptic drugs (phenytoin, phenobarbital and carbamazepine), dexamethasone
  • Concomitant administration of cimetidine, ketoconazole, itraconazole and erythromycin
  • Chloroquine, or
  • Grapefruit juice.
