Things to Consider Before Using Biltricide Praziquantel Oral Medication
Before using any medication, you must carefully consider various risks and benefits associated with it. The decision to use the drug or not is ultimately taken you and your healthcare provider. In case of Biltricide (Praziquantel) which is used to treat parasitic infections, the following things must be considered before beginning the treatment:
Allergic Reactions
Tell your physician if you have history of allergic reaction to Praziquantel or any other drugs. Apart from medicinal allergies, inform your physician about other types of allergies, such as to food, preservatives, dyes, or animals. If you’re going to take non-prescription products, go through the label instructions or package ingredients carefully.
Use in Children
Biltricide (Praziquantel) has been applied to a limited number of children who are 4 years or above in various clinical trials. The results have shown that the medication in effective doses has not been reported to produce any dissimilar side effects or problems in children more than 4 years of age than it does in grownups.
Use in Older People
Majority of medicines are yet to be tested specifically in elderly people. For that reason, it is not known whether these medicines work in the same manner in older people as they do in younger adults or whether they produce different side effects or troubles in aged patients. At present, there is no comparative study available involving the application of Praziquantel in elderly people with application in other age groups.
Pregnancy
Biltricide is listed in the FDA pregnancy category B that explains no potential harm to the fetus if the drug is taken by pregnant women. There is a two-way possibility in this pregnancy category. The first one is studies on animals have disclosed no proof of damage to the fetus; however, adequate studies on pregnant women are missing. In other option, animal studies have shown a certain degree of adverse effect, but ample studies on pregnant women have not succeeded in establishing any risk to an unborn baby.
Breastfeeding
Lack of detailed studies on women has not confirmed the risk to infants when employing Biltricide (Praziquantel) during breastfeeding. You may consider the potential benefits of using the drug against its potential risks before beginning the treatment. Your doctor may also lend you a helping hand in this matter. Consult him/her before taking any step.
Other Medical Conditions
If you’re suffering from any other medical disorders, it may affect the use and effectiveness of Biltricide. Make sure that your doctor is fully aware of your present medical condition. Various medical problems that you need to report include liver disease, heart disease, worm cysts in the brain, or worm cysts in the eye. If you have moderate to severe liver disease, there is high possibility of suffering from serious Praziquantel side effects. In case of worm cysts in the eye, you should not use Biltricide as the death of worm cysts in the eye due to the use of Biltricide may potentially harm your eyes. Heart patients may need to be checked for heart performance regularly while using the medication.
